OCHA Ukraine

This forecast is an approximate estimate of Ukraine’s future population. It is based on the estimate by the Institute for Demography and Quality of Life Issues of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of the country’s population as of January 1, 2022, within the 1991 borders. The forecast is built on expert assessments by specialists from the Institute for Demography and Quality of Life Issues of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine regarding changes in birth rates, life expectancy, and population migration. These expert assessments are based on data from the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on registered births and deaths, as well as migration data from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and international organizations. The forecast was developed under the assumption that the Russian-Ukrainian war will end in 2026. It is conducted within the 1991 borders of Ukraine. The time period of the dataset covers January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2040. The forecast is of a recommendatory nature and serves as a basis for developing state strategies and programs aimed at stabilizing the demographic situation.

Subnational Population Statistics are produced by and contributed to HDX by UNFPA and, in the case of Ukraine, are exceptionally shared by OCHA Ukraine with the approval of UNFPA. The 2024 Common Operational Dataset on Population Statistics (COD-PS) update for Ukraine presents raion-level (ADM-2), oblast-level (ADM-1) and national-level (ADM-0) estimates of population size by sex and standard 5-year demographic age groups. The 2024 COD-PS update revises the 2023 COD-PS update and 2022 COD-PS update produced by UNFPA, by accounting for recent population change due to mobility, mortality and fertility dynamics. This COD-PS update was prepared by the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA. This update was prepared in consultation with the Humanitarian Country Team and UN Country Team in Ukraine, as well as national partners including the Institute for Demography and Quality of Life Problems, Ukraine and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The 2024 COD-PS update, like all COD-PS updates, is strictly a humanitarian data product of the United Nations aligned to the "best available humanitarian data standard". It does not represent or, in any way, replace official statistics or official population projections of the Government of Ukraine and it is not intended to meet the international standards of official statistics. The Ukraine Common Operational Dataset on Population Statistics (COD-PS) 2024 is a restricted dataset, in line with applicable national laws and the host country agreement with the United Nations. It is shared only with the Ukraine Humanitarian Country Team, UN Country Team in Ukraine, and the Government of Ukraine.

The dataset provides a full breakdown of the affected population, PiN, and planned reach by cluster, population group, and SADD at the ADM2 level. It includes severity scores and national and Oblast-level aggregations of PiN and planned reach. A detailed list of HNRP activities is also included.

Populated places (settlements) with coordinates and types are derived from the Ukraine COD-AB dataset (Admin 4 features) and the original administrative boundaries database shared by SSPE “Kartographia” for the preparation of the Ukraine COD-AB 2024 release.

This dataset includes the names, types, statuses, and coordinates of international border crossings of Ukraine with Belarus, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation and Slovakia. The names of the border crossings are in English and Ukrainian.

This dataset is part of the Ukraine Data Explorer Consolidated Multi-Purpose Cash (MPC) 4W and 5W data (Who does What, Where) from Ukraine Cash Working Group (CWG), collected from partners involved in the MPC assistance.

The dataset provides names and locations of the certified airfields in Ukraine that are included in the State Registry of Civil Airfields of Ukraine and the Journal of Admission to Operation of Permanent Runway Platforms as of 6 July 2022 according to the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine. Airfield Certificate issued by the State Aviation Administration confirms the airfield compliance with the requirements of Ukrainian aviation rules. Operation of airfield (helidrome) for the purpose of accomplishment of air transportation and/or aviation works in the absence of the certificate or in case of cancellation of the certificate is forbidden.
