As of December 2023, DTM identified a total of 1,092,196 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 183,437 households across Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. The data collection started in December 2023 in 1,646 locations, in the eight states of north-central and north-west Nigeria. The IDP population included IDPs in camps and camp-like settings (196,502 individuals or 18%) and IDPs residing in host communities (895,694 individuals or 82%). This signifies an IDP increase of 1.5 per cent or 16,303 IDPs compared to what it was in September 2023.

Round 12 of DTM data collection in Nigeria’s north-west and north-central regions was conducted between 13 September and 24 October 2023. During the activity, DTM deployed teams of enumerators to conduct assessments in 826 wards (down from the 881 wards assessed in Round 11 of DTM assessments), located in 172 LGAs (down from 180 LGAs in Round 11). Eight states were covered: Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau (north-central) and Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Katsina and Zamfara (north-west).

DTM enumerators conducted assessments in 1,557 locations where IDPs were residing among host communities. Data was collected on numbers, living conditions and multisectoral needs of displaced populations.

The assessment in the North Central and North West Regions was conducted through key informant interviews in a total of 1,604 locations across the Sates of Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara. The assessment was done between the 1st of July and the 29th of July 2021. In total, these locations host 833,006 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) (134,908 households).
