In response to ongoing conflict in Mali, a significant number of refugees have sought asylum in neighboring Niger, settling primarily in the refugee camps of Tabareybarey and the hosting zones of Intikane. To better understand and meet the food security and livelihood needs of these communities, a comprehensive household survey was conducted between January and June 2016. This survey, jointly overseen by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme, aimed to cover all households within these sites. However, the nomadic tendencies of the Malian refugee population posed challenges to achieving complete census. Despite these difficulties, the data collected is pivotal for informing targeted food distribution, cash assistance, and livelihood programs aimed at fostering self-reliance and economic inclusion. The survey's findings are crucial for refining the aid strategies of both UNHCR and WFP and serve as a baseline for future interventions in the region.

UNHCR uses Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM) as a mechanism to collect feedback from the people with and for whom we work on the quality, sufficiency, utilization and effectiveness of the assistance items they receive. The underlying principle of the process is accountability, as well as a commitment to improving the quality and relevance of support provided, and related services. UNHCR increasingly uses cash based interventions (CBIs) as a preferred modality for delivering assistance, offering greater dignity and choice to displaced people in line with UNHCR’s core protection mandate. In order to ensure that the cash assistance provided meets the intended objectives and that desired outcomes are achieved, UNHCR conducts regular post-distribution and outcome monitoring with a sample of refugee recipients residing across the country. PDMs in Afghanistan are done on a quarterly basis. This dataset is a compilation of all PDMs completed in 2023 and thereby covers people who received CBI in Afghanistan in 2023. Feedback on the modality was collected from 2888 households throughout the year.

UNHCR monitors and supports refugee returnees who have chosen to return to Afghanistan. As part of this process, UNHCR interviews refugees willing to return at the Voluntary Repatriation Centers in the country of asylum, assess the households' conditions for return through interviews at the Encashment Centers in Afghanistan and follows up on the returnees' situation in the areas of return one to six months later through phone surveys. Upon return to Afghanistan, returnees are assisted at four Encashment Centers with a cash grant to support their immediate humanitarian needs and transportation costs. In 2023, UNHCR replaced its long-standing VolRep procedures with the ARRD, which aims to strengthen the support to returnees. 2023 also saw mass returns from Pakistan under the Illegal Foreigner's Repatriation Plan. To support returned Afghans affected by this plan, UNHCR set up Forced Afghan Returns Enrollment (FARE), where household receive similar support and provide information about the conditions under which they return. This dataset is a compilation of datapoints collected through the FARE and ARRD on the 12,500 household UNHCR assisted in their returns. The objective of the interviews is to record details on the returnee households and family members including the amount of cash grant received. Data collected through the VolRep system are available for each year from 2010 to 2022.

The UNHCR Results Monitoring Surveys (RMS) is a household-level survey on forcibly displaced and stateless people. The objective of the survey is to monitor impact and outcome level indicators on education, healthcare, livelihoods, protection concerns, shelter, and water and sanitation. The results contribute to an evidence base for reporting against UNHCR’s multi-year strategies to key stakeholders. The RMS can be implemented in any operational context. A standard structured questionnaire has been developed for the RMS, which can be conducted as a stand-alone survey or flexibly integrated with other data collection exercises. The data includes indicators collected at both the household and individual (household-member) level, and results are statistically representative. This RMS took place in the Republic of the Congo between January and February 2023. The population of interest included refugees and asylum-seekers. The sampling frame was UNHCR's registration database (proGres) of 4,041 households. The sampling approach was random selection with stratification by area, selecting 1,900 households and 1,473 households were interviews. The mode of data collection was Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI).

The Results-Monitoring Survey (RMS) was conducted by UNHCR South Sudan in the last quarter of 2022 to serve as a pilot tool for measuring country operations' results regarding internally displaced persons (IDPs). Using computer-assisted personal interviews, around 4,634 questionnaires were carried out proportionally across eight states. The target was IDPs in camps and non-camp settings, including hard-to-reach areas. A simple random sampling method was used to allow generalizability and minimize bias. The questionnaire was tailored to the local context while drawing from the standard RMS instrument. Sample sizes were calculated for states and counties based on displacement figures and partner presence. A 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error determined the state samples. The county samples used 90% confidence and 5% margins given the need for greater precision at lower administrative levels. Total target was 5,309 households, allocated proportionally. High response rate (97%) exceeded targets in some counties. The pilot provides baseline data on results indicators to track over time. Key aspects were representative sampling, localized questionnaire, sufficient sample size, and community access enabling quality data for ongoing monitoring.
