The UNHCR Results Monitoring Survey (RMS) conducted in Burkina Faso from June to August 2022 aimed to gather data on refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to monitor impact and outcome indicators in education, healthcare, livelihoods, protection concerns, shelter, and water and sanitation. Using a standard structured questionnaire, data was collected at both household and individual levels through Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) and Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). The sample frames were sourced from the “Conseil National de Secours d'Urgence et de Réhabilitation (CONASUR)” in December 2021 for IDPs and UNHCR's registration database, ProGresv4, for refugees and asylum seekers, resulting in 667 observations for RAS, 6 for refugee returnees, and 704 for IDPs. The survey results, which were submitted by August 28, 2022, contribute to UNHCR’s evidence base for multi-year strategic reporting to key stakeholders.

The Meheba Local Area Plan (LAP) for 2024-2028, initiated by Kalumbila Town Council, Department of Resettlement (DoR) and Office of the Commissioner for Refugees (CoR) in Zambia, encompasses a comprehensive strategy to integrate and develop the Meheba region, which hosts refugees and local populations. This plan focuses on modernizing infrastructure, boosting agricultural productivity, and ensuring inclusive community development. Utilizing surveys and extensive stakeholder engagement, the LAP aims to capture data on demographic changes, economic conditions, and social services within Meheba. A total of 1,700 detailed surveys across key populations will assess the impact of interventions and guide future development strategies. By aligning with national policies and focusing on sustainable development, the LAP seeks to transform Meheba into a productive, self-reliant community, enhancing the quality of life for all residents. This dataset will be pivotal in monitoring progress and adjusting policies to better serve the diverse needs of the Meheba population.

This dataset is a product of the “Spatial Profiling” initiative, a part of the Community-based Protection and Solutions Programme Response (Co-PROSPER). The project aimed to create an enabling protection environment in Kandahar and Herat cities through spatial profiling, which involved mapping city resources and services, UNHCR’s Persons we Serve (PwS) settlement areas, and analyzing the collected data for evidence-based humanitarian response planning. Funded by UNHCR, UN-HABITAT conducted spatial profiling of targeted locations in these cities, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and returnees’ camps/settlements. The project also developed new strategic responses through settlement plans for these locations, recommending strategies like provision of basic services such as water, sanitation, access roads, drainage and flood mitigation measures, and shelter. The spatial profiling focused on mapping city resources and services, settlement areas including Land Allocation Scheme (LAS) sites, spontaneous settlements of returnees and IDPs, and private housing schemes. The data collected through the profiling was analyzed for evidence-based programming. This dataset is intended to facilitate the development of new settlement plans for selected settlements in cities, aiming to upgrade the settlements of IDPs in target areas and provide durable solutions for the inhabitants.

Primary data will be collected by means of a household-level survey designed with the participation of the humanitarian clusters in Somalia. Cluster leads are asked to outline information gaps and the type of data required to inform their strategic plans. Key indicators are developed by REACH with the substantive input of participating partners, and subsequently validated by the clusters. REACH will draft the household survey tool through an iterative consultation process with cluster partners and OCHA and is aligned, as much as possible, with the Joint Inter-Sectoral Analysis Framework (JIAF) which will serve as a common and structured method for assessing the severity of needs across different clusters. The assessment will use stratified cluster sampling at the district level using settlements as the clusters and households as the unit of measurement. For some districts, 2-stage stratified random sampling will be used instead of stratified cluster sampling for large urban centres, if it proves to be more efficient and logistically feasible for data collection. The sample will be stratified by population group, disaggregated by non-displaced communities, and IDP settlements; the sample will be further stratified by district to ensure coverage and comparison across the entire country (with the exception of inaccessible areas). In the case of cluster sampling, the minimum cluster size will be set to 6 households. The sample size will be adjusted for the design effect and will enable generalisation of the results to each of the two population strata in each district, with a 90% confidence level and a 10% margin of error.

Since December 2020, the Government of Bangladesh has led the establishment of refugee facilities on the island of Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal and the delivery of relief services in partnership with civil society organizations. Currently nearly 31,000 Rohingya refugees live on Bhasan Char. With the continuous increase of the population on the island through relocations of Rohingya refugees from Cox’s Bazar, it has become imperative to have a more comprehensive view of the needs and capacities of the population on the island. Against this background, a joint multi-sector assessment was implemented by REACH under UNHCR leadership with the following objectives: (1) to inform an evidence-based prioritisation and resource allocation to effectively plan and design programming activities around; (2) to harmonise data collection efforts to avoid duplication of efforts and resources, minimise intrusion into the lives of beneficiaries, and maintain compatibility, quality, and comparability; (3) to provide the basis for a joint multi-stakeholder needs analysis and interpretation process. The surevey found that almost that two thirds of households (67%) reportedly faced challenges in making ends meet financially. A further 88% faced some challenge in accessing health cares. About half of the respondents (46%) information needs were not met, which included information on how to find work (as reported by 17% of households as an information need) or how to get food assisstance(24%). Only 2 % said they struggled with information about access to protection services. 41% reported the WASH facilities were considered unsafe by women and girls in their household. A decrease from 75% in 2022.

Following the change in authority in Afghanistan on 15 August 2021 and the resulting declaration of a Level 3 emergency, UNHCR introduced a rapid assessment methodology to quickly assess humanitarian and protection needs throughout the country as part of scale-up by UNHCR to respond to the unfolding crisis - an effort that continued throughout 2023. The primary focus of the assessments were IDPs and IDP returnees who account for the majority of the households interviewed in these assessments. Nonetheless, as UNHCR takes a whole-of-community approach in its assistance programme, vulnerable host community members were also assessed, alongside a small number of refugee returnees, asylum seekers and refugees, as well as deported and spontaneous returnees under an area-based approach. The Rapid Household Assessments (RHAF) covers all 34 provinces.

The situation inside Afghanistan deteriorated in 2021 and had significant consequences for the most vulnerable among the population. Iran and Pakistan, which are neighbours of Afghanistan, also host some 8.2 million registered Afghan refugees and other Afghans with different statuses. The majority of registered refugees fled Afghanistan over the years, including from as early as 1979. UNHCR has expanded its border monitoring in Afghanistan to include unofficial crossing points to understand flows and frequency on Afghans departing via these points, assess to territory and “the right to seek asylum” as well as the barriers which hinder the movement of people who may need international protection. Interviews at unofficial crossing points were held with key informants such as local residents in border areas, drivers, hotel and restaurant owners or border officials in over 50 locations, through Kunduz, Jalalabad, Herat, Gardez, Mazar and Kandahar field locations. Key informants gave estimates of weekly flows and their composition. This monitoring activity found that the majority of movements to Iran (81%) happen via unofficial border crossings, while less than 18% of movements to Pakistan happen via unofficial border crossings. This dataset is the anonymized version of the original data.

The situation inside Afghanistan deteriorated in 2021 and had significant consequences for the most vulnerable among the population. 1.6 million new arrivals have been witnessed in neighboring countries. While 5.3 million refugees returned to Afghanistan in phases since 2002, this trend has been declining in recent times. Since August 2021, UNHCR has maintained a non-return advisory for Afghanistan (reaffirmed February 2022), calling for a halt on forced returns of Afghan nationals. To assess people’s ability to access the right to return and map potential protection risks and human rights violations faced by people, over 80,000 interviews were conducted with people across six crossing points from Pakistan, Iran and Central Asia into Afghanistan. Interviews were conducted through out 2023. Interviewees were selected to gain an understanding of triggers, intentions and reasons for Afghan cross-border movements and assess access to territory. Since the outset of the war in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, over 32,070 displaced Ukrainians arrived in Montenegro by April 2022. In response, the Government of Montenegro activated Temporary Protection status for Ukrainian refugees. From April to May 2022, UNHCR conducted an exercise of 445 interviews conducted with 1,138 household members randomly sampled Ukrainian households under Temporary Protection. The survey was administered through face-to-face interviews in multiple languages. The survey gathered information on refugees' socioeconomic profiles, intentions to stay in Montenegro or move onward to other countries, sectoral needs, and awareness of available services. The data will inform the provision of protection services and humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian refugees by the Government of Montenegro, UNHCR, and partners. The intention survey data provides insights into the displaced Ukrainian population in Montenegro and their immediate and longer-term prospects, enabling evidence-based planning of the refugee response.
