Lars Wirkus joined BICC in 2000 as a Researcher. At present, he is Head of Section Data and Geomatics.
His current work focuses on developing and implementing interactive relational databases and GIS and Web-GIS based applications as well as on remote sensing and earth observation in the context of applied conflict and security research. Tools and databases developed by Lars and his team tackle challenges related to 'Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in organized violence', 'Global Militarization', 'Refugee Research', 'Information on War and Peace' and 'Natural resources extraction and conflict analysis'.
Previous experiences include research and practical work on natural resources and conflicts, environmental security, climate change, institutional aspects of water resources governance and the micro level analysis of water resources related conflicts as well as projects related to earth observation-based monitoring of environment and security.
