This map illustrates satellite-detected damage to infrastructure and roads in the city of Ar Raqqa, Syrian Arab Republic and is derived from a full UNOSAT analysis of damage to Ar Raqqa in 2017. Using satellite imagery acquired 21 October 2017, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified 5 destroyed bridges, 74 damaged road segments and 94 visible impact craters affecting roads. Approximately 159 structures corresponding to educational facilities, and 26 structures likely related to health facilities are also affected. UNOSAT analysis shows that 8 water towers are completely destroyed and there is damage to one electric substation and a sewage treatment facility. Note that sources of infrastructure data include various open source datasets which are likely incomplete, as well as visual review of satellite imagery by UNOSAT for certain features like water towers. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.

The Ministry of Education announced the first phase of school reopening on 16 October 2017. Therefore, IOM prioritized schools currently housing the displaced population in the first round of DTM assessment. 43 of the pre-identified collective centers were schools and 33 of these were housing displaced individuals on 6 October. IOM aims to provide basic information on these targeted schools to inform the government and general humanitarian community of the situation in these collective centers and support provision of assistance. This report presents the results of assessments carried out from 11-14 October in 19 schools that are scheduled to reopen in the coming days.

Kenya’s commitment to close down Dadaab by mid-2017, the world’s largest refugee camp hosting over 300,000 Somalis, is putting increasing pressure on service delivery and infrastructure in Somalia. By October 2016, an estimate of 31,226 Somali people have returned from Kenya, the majority of which are heading to Kismayo, Baidoa, Luuq and Mogadishu. While the caseload of returnees is expected to continue growing over the coming months, there is no clear understanding of movement patterns of returnees or internally displaced persons which further complicates the attempts by humanitarian organisations to provide for required services. The absence of a CCCM cluster in Somalia means that information on humanitarian needs and gaps has been limited to ad-hoc and un-coordinated assessments. The Kismayo IDP settlement assessment was triggered as a result of the need for a multi-cluster, area-based and coordinated information approach for humanitarian planning and service delivery in informal IDP settlements in Somalia. The Kismayo IDP Settlement Assessment was carried out with financial support from USAID-OFDA and ECHO and in close collaboration with clusters (WASH, Shelter & NFIs, Education, Food Security, Health, Nutrition and Protection).

This report documents damage over the Gaza Strip following the July-August 2014 conflict. It is based on analysis of commercial satellite imagery and quantifies damage to overall building structures, health facilities, education facilities, agricultural fields and greenhouses. The study also compares damage from the 2014 conflict to that of the 2009 conflict. The analysis is supplemented by ground photos following UNOSAT deployment to Gaza in September 2014.
