The FSVA includes 13 indicators based on a review of data availability at the district level and their ability to measure various aspects of food and nutrition security. The FSVA divides these indicators into two sets: chronic food and nutrition insecurity and transitory food insecurity. Within chronic, indicators measure food availability, food access, and food utilization. The transitory indicators describe climatic and environmental factors that affect food insecurity from an availability and access perspective. The nine indicators that relate to chronic food insecurity are combined into a single composite indicator to describe the overall district food security classification.

Kenya’s commitment to close down Dadaab by mid-2017, the world’s largest refugee camp hosting over 300,000 Somalis, is putting increasing pressure on service delivery and infrastructure in Somalia. By October 2016, an estimate of 31,226 Somali people have returned from Kenya, the majority of which are heading to Kismayo, Baidoa, Luuq and Mogadishu. While the caseload of returnees is expected to continue growing over the coming months, there is no clear understanding of movement patterns of returnees or internally displaced persons which further complicates the attempts by humanitarian organisations to provide for required services. The absence of a CCCM cluster in Somalia means that information on humanitarian needs and gaps has been limited to ad-hoc and un-coordinated assessments. The Kismayo IDP settlement assessment was triggered as a result of the need for a multi-cluster, area-based and coordinated information approach for humanitarian planning and service delivery in informal IDP settlements in Somalia. The Kismayo IDP Settlement Assessment was carried out with financial support from USAID-OFDA and ECHO and in close collaboration with clusters (WASH, Shelter & NFIs, Education, Food Security, Health, Nutrition and Protection).

Dataset shows rice production in various irrigation schemes over the last five years. The total area cropped increased by 25.1 per cent from 21.9 thousand hectares in 2017 to 27.4 thousand hectares in 2018. This was mainly due to an increase in area under irrigation brought about by sufficient irrigation water in Mwea scheme, which accounted for 84.3 per cent of the total area cropped. The number of plot holders in all schemes also increased by 4.0 per cent to 14,028 in 2018. During the same period, the volume of Paddy produced increased by 38.7 per cent from 81.2 thousand tonnes in 2017 to 112.6 thousand tonnes in 2018 due to availability of irrigation water. The gross value of output increased by 59.1 per cent to KSh 7.0 billion in 2018. Similarly, payments to plot holders increased from KSh 2.2 billion in 2017 to KSh 3.8 billion in 2018.

The Food Balance Sheet (FBS) is a tool that is used to assess the food situation of a given country. It provides a preview of the supply of various food commodities and their subsequent use at primary commodity equivalent. Consequently, the FBS is a national accounting/statistical framework, presenting a comprehensive picture of the pattern of a country’s food supply during a specified reference period. Given the usefulness of the FBS, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has given considerable attention to its development. As a result, countries have been encouraged to adopt the FBS framework in order to assist in analyzing the food supply situation. The FBS calculates the average quantity of a given food commodity an individual consumes in a particular year. This is given in terms of kilograms of the food item consumed by an individual.
