This dataset compiles information on approved Special Political Mission (SPM) positions within the designated organization/entity. Special Political Missions are unique diplomatic initiatives established to address specific political challenges, conflicts, or crises. The dataset focuses on posts that have received official approval for deployment. Professional and higher categories include: P-2, P-3, P-4, P-5, D-1, D-2, Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) and Under-Secretary-General (USG). General service and related categories include: General Service other level (GS-OL), General Service principal level (GS-PL) and Field Service/ Security Service (FS/SS). National staff categories include: Local level (LL) and National Professional Officer (NO). Also includes United Nations Volunteers (UNV).

The Multi-Year Appeal (MYA) is the primary extra-budgetary instrument of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). Voluntary funding through the MYA helps DPPA to lead the Secretary-General’s good offices and mediation efforts, provide political analysis, electoral assistance, and supports Special Envoys and Special Representatives of the Secretary-General in their efforts to foster inclusive dialogues and resolve conflicts. Two-thirds of MYA funding is unearmarked, which critically grants DPPA the flexibility to respond to acute needs and redirect resources as required. The MYA is guided by the Department’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. A new Appeal for 2023-2026 was launched to accompany the implementation of DPPA’s latest Strategic Plan, calling for a total of $170 million over four years. Voluntary funding helps DPPA to raise extrabudgetary funding for conflict prevention and conflict resolution and enables the Department to maintain crucial efforts in support of Special Political Missions (SPMs), providing political analysis as well as mediation and electoral support to a multitude of partners. The MYA is also an incubator of ideas and increasingly invests in new areas, such as innovation and new technologies or by helping expand on the interlinkages between climate change and peace and security challenges. It supports key thematic priorities of the Department, including women, peace and security. As a uniquely flexible tool, the MYA is positioned to seize opportunities and enable rapid responses in pursuit of DPPA’s conflict prevention, peacemaking and peacebuilding mandate. On average, two-thirds of contributions are unearmarked, providing DPPA with the flexibility to channel funding to where it is needed most. Activities funded by the MYA contribute directly to the achievement of SDGs, in particular SDG 5 (gender equality and women’s empowerment), 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions), and 17 (partnerships). The dataset shall be updated biannually (July and December).

This data tracks the inclusion of provisions to promote or protect gender equality or the rights, security or safety of women and girls in peace and ceasefire agreements that were the result of UN-led or co-led mediation efforts.

The data presents the level of gender capacity with regards to full-time Gender Advisers and part-time Gender Focal Points, in DPPA's Special Political Missions.

Context: The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights was established by Security Council Resolution 350 (1974) to: Maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria; Supervise the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces; and Supervise the areas of separation and limitation, as provided in the May 1974 Agreement on Disengagement. As part of the return to full mandate implementation and complete the process of incremental return the Bravo Side. UNDOF continues with the restoration, repainting and refurbishment of the barrels marking the ceasefire line and the Bravo line, which delineate the Area of Separation. Data: This dataset contains information on the number of barrels in the ceasefire line and the Bravo line restored, repainted, and refurbished by UNDOF since January 2022.

United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) patrol routes cover the full breadth of the Area of Separation and 70 percent of the area of limitation. This datasets contains the number of UNDOF operational patrols carried out on a monthly basis.

Context: Over the years of mandate, there have been instances the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization's Observer Group Golan (UNTSO OGG) have vacated monitored positions due to security concerns or conflict escalation. "Reoccupied positions" refer to those specific locations or observation posts within the UNDOF/UNTSO area of operations that were previously abandoned or temporarily vacated but have since been reoccupied by UNDOF or OGG personnel or by the relevant parties to the conflict, often after the security situation has improved or been stabilized. In UNDOF operations in the Golan Heights, the term "Bravo side" typically refers to one of the demilitarized zones (DMZs) established as part of the ceasefire agreements. Data: This dataset contains information on the number of reoccupied positions, either by UNDOF or by UNTSO's OGG, on the Bravo side since 2017. Each row represents a year of data.

In accordance with staff rule 7.8, all travel arrangements for individuals traveling on behalf of the United Nations, including advance booking and purchase of tickets, should be finalized 16 calendar days in advance of commencement of official travel. Pursuant to section XXII, paragraph 17, of General Assembly resolution 72/262 A, the budget of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team pursuant to resolutions 1526 (2004) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and the Taliban and associated individuals and entities and the budget of the Office of the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009) are presented separately from 2018 onwards. Previously, the information is presented under the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team. The figures for 2015 and 2016 reflect the information for the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) only. The figures for 2017 and onwards reflect the figures for the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel following the merger of UNOWA and the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Sahel.

This dataset contains data from the PK Ministerial Implementation Tracker, which systematically records progress on the implementation of the pledges.

Special political missions rely on Headquarters for backstopping support for a wide range of functions, ensuring regular and effective communication between missions and the United Nations system in New York, regular liaison with Member States through permanent missions and preparing a wide range of substantive material, including briefing material for the Security Council and regular reports of the Secretary-General, among a wide range of functions. While the resources included in the budgets of special political missions for backstopping support are fundamental for the Secretariat to provide support to special political missions, regular budget and extrabudgetary resources are often also required to provide adequate support.

This dataset provides a comprehensive overview of air operations associated with special political missions. It encompasses a range of information crucial for understanding the financial and operational aspects of these missions. The Other category includes equipment and supplies, services, landing fees and ground handling charges, aircrew subsistence allowance and liability insurance. Methodology: An artificial intelligence model was trained for extracting the relevant table and accompanying details from the Secretary-General’s programme budget reports. Subsequently, the output underwent simple random sampling for validation.

Efficient vehicle fleet management is critical for the operational success of Special Political Missions (SPMs) undertaken by the United Nations. Headquarters provides guidance to field missions, emphasizing a direct correlation between vehicle holdings and the number of staff. Operational priorities are determined based on supporting mileages, frequency of use, and usage patterns. The Secretariat, in its ongoing efforts to enhance vehicle fleet management, has established a standard ratio for light passenger vehicles in peacekeeping missions. This ratio serves as a benchmark for assessing ground transportation needs. Furthermore, the Secretariat monitors vehicle acquisition to ensure missions utilize cost-efficient vehicles from established systems contracts, contributing to efficiency gains without compromising operational needs. The dataset will be regularly updated to reflect changes in personnel levels, vehicle holdings, and any adjustments to standard ratios as communicated by the Secretariat.

The dataset contains the estimated extrabudgetary resources for special political missions. Extrabudgetary resources are regularly used for backstopping, surge requirements for good offices, crisis situations and other activities related to the mandates of Special Political Missions. The resources are critical for inter-mission activities and backstopping capacity at Headquarters, thereby enabling closer collaboration. Extrabudgetary resources are also used for targeted projects in different regions, such as on water management in Central Asia, in the Cameroon-Nigeria land boundary region, and various projects in the Great Lakes region.

This data presents participation of women on party delegations and in UN- mediation teams in UN-led and co-led peace processes. It also tracks whether women civil society and gender experts were consulted in the processes.
