Assistance Coordination Unit

The Syrian IDP camps monitoring interactive study is issued by the IMU of the ACU on a monthly basis, to monitor the humanitarian situation of 231 IDp camps in Idleb and Aleppo governorates in Syria’s northwest, shedding light on the needs of the IDPs and the services provided in the camps in the following sectors: Population statistics, WASH, Health, Education, FSL, Shelter and NFI, in addition to the priority needs of IDPs. The study also includes statistics of those who arrive at and leave the camps and the important incidents which took place during the month of the data collection. This product is funded by the CDCS-MEAE. The recent earthquake that struck the south of Turkey and the north of Syria on the 6th of February has caused widespread destruction and devastation in the region. Thousands of people lost their lives, and many more were injured. The aftermath of this disaster has left many families displaced and in desperate need of medical attention. In response to this crisis, the Assistance Coordination Unit (ACU) conducted a survey in health facilities in northwest Syria to assess epidemiologically earthquake-induced injuries in northwest Syria. This report aims to present this survey’s findings and provide insights into the types of injuries sustained by individuals affected by the earthquake using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD 10). This report highlights the urgent need for medical aid and support in the affected areas to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of those impacted by this tragic event.

On February 6, 2023, at dawn, a strong earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, resulting in thousands of casualties and thousands of injured in Turkey and North-West Syria. The Assistance Coordination Unit (ACU), through its field team network represented by the following departments: Early Warning Alert and Response Network, WASH, Polio Team, Immunization Program, Information Management Unit, DPU, and M&E conducted a needs and damage assessment following the devastating earthquake.

The IMU of the ACU, issues its fourth edition of the “Winter Needs in the Northern Syrian Camps” report, addressing 680 camps in the governorates of Aleppo and Idleb. The report brings to light the most important items that IDPs are in need for in terms of type and quantities, according to international standards for humanitarian response. It furthermore, brings emphasis to bear on the course of action that IDPs, as well as the camp management teams, should follow to drive down the effects of natural disasters that may put their lives at risk. Noting that the number of families that ACU enumerators were able to assess their needs reached 156,873 families, making up an overall individual number of 872,082 IDPs

The Information Management Unit (IMU) of Assistance Coordination Unit (ACU) produced the Seventh Edition of the “Winter Needs in Northwest Syria Camps” report. It sheds light on the reality of displacement camps in Northwest Syria, the numbers of IDPs and their age groups, the nature of IDPs’ shelters, their most urgent needs for the coming winter, and the top priorities of the needs. The report also highlights shows the availability of civil defense centers at the camps. The report presents recommendations for humanitarian actors to respond to the most urgent and life-saving response to be provided based on the findings of the study.

The ACU’s Information Management Unit conducted the 5th version of its annual research “Schools in Syria”, to highlight the impact of the Syrian conflict on the education sector in the Syrian Arab Republic. This is the most representative, nuanced iteration of this study to date, covering 4,016 schools within 78 sub-districts across 6 governorates in all non-governmental areas of the Syrian Arab Republic, building upon 38,538 data e-forms with 34,522 forms on perception surveys with school students, teachers, principals and parents. The research key findings and data represent the time period of February till May 2019 which cover the second semester of the academic year 2018/2019. This report provides a broad view of the current obstacles and most pressing needs of the educational sector, covering a spectrum of issues ranging from facilities to student and teacher life in Syria’s embattled regions. The report consists of 15 sections: Methodology, General Information, Functioning School Buildings, WASH in Schools, School Equipment, School Levels and School Days, Curricula, Certificates, Students, School and Students Needs, Teachers, Disabled Students and Psychosocial Support, Policies and Regulations within Schools, Non-Functional Schools, Priorities and Recommendations. The 5th version of Schools in Syria will be released and published by mid-December 2019.
