The IGAD Regional Focus of the 2024 Global Report on Food Crises is the result of a collaboration between the Food Security Information Network (FSIN) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional economic community that forms one of the building blocks of the African Union. It provides a comprehensive assessment of acute food insecurity and malnutrition in the eight IGAD countries as well as trends over time, key drivers and populations of highest concern based on a rigorous methodology.
In 2023, more aid workers died by violence than in any previous year on record, with 280 fatalities reported in 33 countries. More than half of these deaths (163) were aid workers killed in the first three months of the conflict in Gaza, mostly as a result of airstrikes.
