    The Syrian IDP camps monitoring interactive study is issued by the IMU of the ACU on a monthly basis, to monitor the humanitarian situation of 231 IDp camps in Idleb and Aleppo governorates in Syria’s northwest, shedding light on the needs of the IDPs and the services provided in the camps in the following sectors: Population statistics, WASH, Health, Education, FSL, Shelter and NFI, in addition to the priority needs of IDPs. The study also includes statistics of those who arrive at and leave the camps and the important incidents which took place during the month of the data collection.

    The ACU’s Information Management Unit conducted the 4th version of its annual research “Schools in Syria”, to highlight the impact of the Syrian conflict on education and the needs of students and school supplies. This is the most representative, nuanced iteration of this study to date, covering 4,079 schools within 99 sub-districts across 10 governorates, building upon 35,925 data e-forms with 31,846 forms on perception surveys. It has significant increase in the number of the functional schools addressed over its first version to the current one by 2,572 schools.     The ACU’s Information Management Unit conducted the 5th version of its annual research “Schools in Syria”, to highlight the impact of the Syrian conflict on the education sector in the Syrian Arab Republic. This is the most representative, nuanced iteration of this study to date, covering 4,016 schools within 78 sub-districts across 6 governorates in all non-governmental areas of the Syrian Arab Republic, building upon 38,538 data e-forms with 34,522 forms on perception surveys with school students, teachers, principals and parents. The research key findings and data represent the time period of February till May 2019 which cover the second semester of the academic year 2018/2019. This report provides a broad view of the current obstacles and most pressing needs of the educational sector, covering a spectrum of issues ranging from facilities to student and teacher life in Syria’s embattled regions. The report consists of 15 sections: Methodology, General Information, Functioning School Buildings, WASH in Schools, School Equipment, School Levels and School Days, Curricula, Certificates, Students, School and Students Needs, Teachers, Disabled Students and Psychosocial Support, Policies and Regulations within Schools, Non-Functional Schools, Priorities and Recommendations. The 5th version of Schools in Syria will be released and published by mid-December 2019.

    Using 10m resolution multispectral imagery from the Sentinel-2A satellite, a relativized burn ratio (RBR) was calculated and used for burned land classification to assess and quantify areas which have been burned between 4 May and 30 June 2019 in the governorates of Al-Hasakeh, Deir-ez-Zor, Ar-Raqqa, Aleppo, Idleb and Northern Hama. The before and after images are composites ranging from 6 April to 3 May 2019 and 27 to 30 June 2019.

    The IMU of the ACU, issues its fourth edition of the “Winter Needs in the Northern Syrian Camps” report, addressing 234 camps in the governorates of Aleppo and Idleb. The report brings to light the most important items that IDPs are in need for in terms of type and quantities, according to international standards for humanitarian response. It furthermore, brings emphasis to bear on the course of action that IDPs, as well as the camp management teams, should follow to drive down the effects of natural disasters that may put their lives at risk. Noting that the number of families that ACU enumerators were able to assess their needs reached 46,145 families, making up an overall individual number of 252,052 IDPs

    This map illustrates shelters in the area of the Rukban border crossing on the Syrian-Jordanian border. Using satellite images collected by the WorldView-03 satellite on 23 June 2018 and the GaoFen-2 satellite on 24 June 2018, UNOSAT located 11,702 probable shelters along the Jordanian side of the border, 25 kilometers southwest of the Al Waleed crossing. This is a 12 percent increase in apparent shelters visible compared to the previous UNOSAT analysis done using an image collected 16 January 2018. Due to the small size and the irregularity of the shelters it is likely that some shelters may have been missed in this analysis, or some shelters were included erroneously. Due to the scale of this map and the lack of suitable border information at this scale, the border in this map has been excluded. This map is intended for field support and local authorities should be consulted for boundary information. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Using satellite imagery collected 6 March 2018 and comparing with imagery acquired 23 February 2018, UNITAR - UNOSAT conducted a Rapid Damage Assessment, over a total area of 94.7 square kilometers, to provide an overview of areas of recent damage. The area analyzed was divided in cells and each cell was assessed searching for presence of new damage. Our analysis shows that 14% of the cells were affected by major new damage, with presence of buildings completely destroyed or severely damaged between 23 February 2018 and 6 March 2018. In addition 14% of the cells showed signs of minor new damage, with visible impact craters, debris or moderately damaged structures.     This map illustrates satellite-detected damage density in the subdistricts of Kafr Batna and Irbin and in the eastern part of Damascus city, Syrian Arab Republic. Using satellite imagery acquired 3 December 2017 and 2 April 2016, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified a total of 12,541 affected structures. Approximately 3,853 of these were destroyed, 5,141 severely damaged, and 3,547 moderately damaged. Comparison with the previous UNOSAT analysis using imagery from 2 April 2016 shows an overall increase of 6% in the number of damaged buildings since 2016. The areas with a higher increase in the percentage of damage are Ein Tarma (14% increase), Hammura (15% increase) and Kafr Batna (17 % increase). Moreover, approximately 7% of the buildings damaged as of April 2016 have been targeted again and suffered additional damage. The majority of these buildings are located in Ein Tarma, Jobar and Al Maamouniye. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.     This map illustrates satellite-detected damage to infrastructure and roads in a portion of the city of Deir Ez Zor, Syrian Arab Republic and is derived from a full UNOSAT analysis of damage to Deir Ez Zor in 2017. Using satellite imagery acquired 9 November 2017, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified 6 destroyed bridges, 54 damaged road segments and 93 visible impact craters affecting roads. Approximately 169 structures corresponding to educational facilities, and 21 structures likely related to health facilities are also affected. UNOSAT analysis shows that there are 3 destroyed electricity towers south of the city. Note that sources of infrastructure data include various open source datasets which are likely incomplete, as well as visual review of satellite imagery by UNOSAT for certain features like towers.     This map illustrates satellite-detected damage to infrastructure and roads in the city of Ar Raqqa, Syrian Arab Republic and is derived from a full UNOSAT analysis of damage to Ar Raqqa in 2017. Using satellite imagery acquired 21 October 2017, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified 5 destroyed bridges, 74 damaged road segments and 94 visible impact craters affecting roads. Approximately 159 structures corresponding to educational facilities, and 26 structures likely related to health facilities are also affected. UNOSAT analysis shows that 8 water towers are completely destroyed and there is damage to one electric substation and a sewage treatment facility. Note that sources of infrastructure data include various open source datasets which are likely incomplete, as well as visual review of satellite imagery by UNOSAT for certain features like water towers.     This map illustrates density of satellite-detected shelters and other buildings at the Atmeh Internally Displaced Persons settlement in Dana Subdistrict, Harem District, Idlib Governorate, Syria. As of 12 July 2017, a total of 14,569 shelters were detected as well as 217 infrastructure and support buildings within the displayed area. This represents an increase in structures of over 88% since the previous UNOSAT analysis using an image from 22 May 2015, when the number of shelters was 7,684 and the number of infrastructure and support buildings was 171 within the same area. The full UNOSAT analysis detected 45,591 structures over the Dana Subdistrict as of 12 July 2017. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.     This map illustrates satellite-detected damage density in the city of Ar Raqqa, Syrian Arab Republic. Using satellite imagery acquired 21 October 2017, 03 February 2017, 29 May 2015, 12 February 2014, 22 October 2013, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified a total of 12,668 affected structures within the city. Approximately 3,289 of these were destroyed, 3,924 severely damaged, and 5,455 moderately damaged. While some damaged was present by 3 February, most of the damaged occured between that date and 21 October 2017 when 10,991 structures were newly damaged and 64 structures experienced an increase in damage.This analysis does not include pre-war military bases and facilities. As of 12 July 2017, a total of 18,547 shelters were detected as well as 333 infrastructure and support buildings within the displayed area. This represents an increase in structures of over 73% since the previous UNOSAT analysis using an image from 22 May 2015, when the number of shelters was 10,898 and the number of infrastructure and support buildings was 48 within the same area.The full UNOSAT analysis detected 45,591 structures over the Dana Subdistrict as of 12 July 2017.     This map illustrates satellite-detected areas of displaced person settlements in the Daraa and Quneitra Governorates, Syria. Using satellite imagery collected between 3 November 2016 and 7 June 2017, covering an analyzed area of 2,513 sq km (251,362 ha), UNOSAT identified 766 locations where possible displaced persons shelters are visible. Approximately a total of 5,516 shelter structures are estimated to be within the 777 ha of settlement areas. Due to the characteristics of the possible IDP settlements in the area, being the majority of them scattered structures in agricultural fields, the number of possible IDP shelters might have been overestimated.     This map illustrates satellite-detected damage in the city of Daraa, Syrian Arab Republic. Using satellite imagery acquired 07 February and 06 January 2017, 19 April 2016, 04 June 2015, 01 January 2014, and 07 September 2013, UNITAR - UNOSAT identified a total of 1,503 affected structures within the city. Approximately 224 of these were destroyed, 498 severely damaged, and 781 moderately damaged. While some of the city was damaged by 19 April 2016, 419 structures were newly damaged and 7 structures experienced an increase in damage between that date and 07 February 2017.
