The first dataset covers events where health workers were killed, kidnapped or arrested (KKA) and incidents where health facilities were damaged or destroyed by a perpetrator including state and non-state actors, criminals, individuals, students and other staff members. The remaining datasets include threats and incidents of violence as well as protests and other events affecting health care between September and December 2018.     The overall objective of the Hard to Reach component of the Whole of Afghanistan Assessment was to supplement of the household data collection with an understanding of the multi-sectoral needs faced by those in Hard to Reach areas. This data ought to inform humanitarian programming in these districts and support the identification of nationwide inter-sectoral needs and how they inter-relate across different geographic locations and population groups outlined in the Humaniarian Needs Overview (HNO). The Hard to Reach component of the Whole of Afghanistan (WoA) Assessment utilised Mapping Focus Group Discussions for the mapping process and Key Informant Interviews with knowledgeable community members to identify needs and access constraints. This data complemented the household-level data collection component of the Whole of Afghanistan. The presented dataset here includes the key informant responses across the 70 Hard to Reach districts, conducted to capture inter-sectoral needs of displaced and host households in these areas of Afghanistan.

    The overall objective of the assessment was to inform multi-cluster humanitarian programming for the Afghanistan response by identifying inter-sectoral needs and how they inter-relate across different geographic locations and population groups outlined in the Humaniarian Needs Overview (HNO). The Whole of Afghanistan (WoA) Assessment was based on a mixed methods approach, employing a quantified household-level survey, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions to collect a wide range of data. The presented dataset includes the data from the household-level survey, generalisable at the provincial level for all population groups combined with a 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error, and generalisable at the regional level for each population group individually with a confident level of 95% and margin of error of 5%. This was done to capture inter-sectoral needs of displaced and host households in each province of Afghanistan.

    This report considers present and recent past food security assessments for Afghanistan in the context of hydrology, climate change and conflict. Population comparisons by data source (UN OCHA, LandScan, WorldPop, and Gridded Population of the World) and rainfall anomalies from 2013-2016 accompany the report. The authors, Zainab al Badri, Atia Curtiss, and Zoe Garcia, completed their research in partial fulfillment of Public Health coursework in Medical Geography, for Spring 2017, at Drew University. Dr. Lisa Jordan edited the report and supplemented their work with additional spatial data.
  • This map illustrates satellite-detected landslide and flood water extent in Peshghor village and surrounding areas in Khenj District, Panjshir Province, Afghanistan as seen on Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, 10 m resolution, collected on 13 July 2018, one day after the disaster happened. The landslides and floodwaters hit villages downstream because of the break-up of the natural banks of the dam. As a result, Peshghor and surrounding villages have been cut off and damages have been reported on structures and buildings. Within the current map extent Saricha primary road is potentially affected by the landslides and the overflow of Panjshir River. Around 198 buildings are located within areas affected by the landslide and 9 within areas affected by the floods. Due to the resolution of the satellite imagery, the extent of landslide and floodwaters may be underestimated and as a consequence, the number of buildings potentially affected. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.

    Between April and June 2014, significant flooding arose in the northern regions of the country – namely in eight northern provinces. The poor structural integrity of houses, thick muds and a general lack of flood awareness led to large scale damage amongst affected communities. More than 112,000 individuals residing in nearly 17,000 households were impacted. As a result, the humanitarian community mobilized to assist 6,480 fully damaged households and 5,264 partially damaged households. This evaluation intends to provide information on the amount of self-recovery, consisting of the level and type of coping strategies used by both assisted and non-assisted households since the flooding in 2014. Therefore, the evaluation provides Shelter Cluster partners with the information they need to plan for effective and targeted intervention and advocate for further response on behalf of vulnerable households. Data was collected between 7th March and 3rd April 2017 and a probability sampling strategy was used.

    The number of families enduring long periods of displacement in Afghanistan is increasing. Although it has often been presumed that those displaced for long periods eventually adapt to their surroundings and integrate into their host community, this assessment report shows that this is not the case. Isolated from their social networks, internally displaced persons (IDPs) displaced over a long period of time struggle to secure regular employment, adequate shelter and are often food insecure. This prolonged IDP (PIDP) assessment report is designed to identify the needs and vulnerabilities of those displaced for prolonged periods of time, beyond the initial emergency displacement period.

    On the 26th of October 2015, a large scale earthquake caused shelter damage throughout much of northern and central Afghanistan. During August 2016, the REACH Initiative (supported by ACTED, AfghanAid and People in Need) conducted a shelter response evaluation in 3 districts of Afghanistan on behalf of the Shelter Cluster. The aim of the assessment was to evaluate shelter interventions and locate possible intervention gaps in order to inform the shelter cluster of Afghanistan of the current shelter context and needs of earthquake affected families. The assessment consisted of three specific areas of investigation: 1. To monitor change in sheltering conditions for families 2. To evaluate the value of various shelter interventions in allowing families to recover and to identify possible gaps 3. To determine recovery limitations and successes relating to vulnerable groups

    In October, November and December 2016, a comprehensive mixed qualitative verification exercise was undertaken in Afghanistan. A secondary data review of assessment data identifying IDPs displaced between the 1st of January 2014 and 1st of March 2016 allowed an estimate of nationwide prolonged IDP locations and population. Field teams then verified through key informant interviews, data requests and field visits to verify the populations found at each location, and snowballed to widen the geographic coverage. The final dataset presented here is the list of locations verified, with estimated populations.
