Caveats / Comments

The original census lists 1) Chewa and Nyanja and 2) Nkhonde and Nyakyusa as separate languages. They are grouped here as 1) Chewa and 2) Nyakyusa-Ngonde, per current academic convention which considers them the same languages. The methodology by which illiteracy and ability to speak English were measured is also unknown. All data is drawn from government census results and is subject to any associated limitations or distortions present in the source data. Language data is drawn from the 1998 census, and so will be less accurate due to age. Newer language data is not yet available. Language shares below 0.1% of an area population have been discarded. As a result, languages may not be present at higher administrative levels. All decimal values have been rounded to a maximum of 3 decimal places. V02 makes corrections to the calculations in "main_language_share" based on aggregation of Chewa and Nyanja languages.
