Methodology

Population censuses in Ethiopia happen every ten years. The last census was conducted in 2007.

In order to have estimation for newly created woredas after the 2007 census, population data from regional BoFED is used. CSA’s 2017 projection growth rate is applied for all regions except the Somali region where the 2014 projection is used.

A proportional correction factor is also applied to have same total population per region as CSA 2020 projection.

Caveats / Comments

The age disaggregated data provided at administrative levels 1, 2, and 3 are derived from national ratios provided by the Federal Ministry of Health. While the lower level population data are valid, the age data will under- or over-count the numbers of children adults, and elderly people.

The sex disaggregated data provided at administrative levels 2 and 3 in just the Somali [ET05] region are derived from the actual administrative level 1 data ratio provided by the Central Statistics Agency (CSA). While the population data are valid, the sex data in that region will under- or over-count the numbers of females and males.

In the population statistics, two additional admin 3 units are included compared to the administrative boundary datasets which are available on HDX (https://data.humdata.org/dataset/ethiopia-cod-ab). These are Dawe Serer (ET041199) in Oromia region and Quarsadula (ET050905) in Somali region. These two admin 3 units cannot be represented on maps because of their contested boundaries, but they are being used in all types of analysis.
