This dataset is part of the data series [?]: UNHCR - Socioeconomic assessment of Refugees
Since 1992, Kenya has been a generous host of refugees and asylum seekers, a population which today exceeds 470,000 people. The Kakuma Refugee Camps have long been among the largest hosting sites, and have become even larger in recent years, with an estimated 67 percent of the current refugee population arriving in the past five years. In 2015, UNHCR, the Government of Kenya, and partners established Kalobeyei Settlement, located 40 kilometers north of Kakuma, to reduce the population burden on the other camps and facilitate a shift towards an area-based development model that addresses the longer term prospects of both refugees and the host community. The refugee population makes up a significant share of the local population (an estimated 40 percent at the district level) and economy, engendering both positive and negative impacts on local Kenyans. While Kenya has emerged as a leader in measuring the impacts of forced displacement, refugees are not systematically included in the national household surveys that serve as the primary tools for measuring and monitoring poverty, labor markets and other welfare indicators at a country-wide level. As a result, comparison of poverty and vulnerability between refugees, host communities and nationals remains difficult. Initiated jointly by UNHCR and the World Bank, this survey was designed to address these shortcomings and support the settlement's development framework, as well as the wider global vision laid out by the Global Refugee Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals. Data were collected in November 2018 to January 2019, covering about 6004 households.

The long-term presence of refugees in Chad and the reduction in funding to provide assistance in recent years have led the humanitarian community to reconsider the approach to assistance of these populations. WFP and UNHCR, the Government's main partners in providing assistance to refugees, had conducted a "socio-economic categorization" in 2014 and 2015 in some refugee camps, and an update was decided for 2017. This update was designed to go beyond a simple categorization and focuses on identifying profiles of refugee households that can be empowered in the short to medium term and the factors that can foster this empowerment. The assessment covers 87,724 refugee households in Chad and was carried out during June-August 2017.

This assessment was carried out in Zimbabwe's Tongogara Refugee Camp. Its aim was to help UNHCR better understand refugees' and asylum seekers' living conditions and needs, which in turn will inform priority setting, programming and advocacy. The assessment was underpinned by the objectives of the "Graduation Approach" which targets support to the ultra-poor amongst the refugee population. A quantitative survey was conducted among 386 households during October 2017.

In late December 2017, the northeaster Ituri province of DRC experienced inter-ethnic violence which resulted in displacement of tens of thousands of civilians crossing the border to Uganda. Close to 60,000 refugees arrived in the Kyangwali settlement in a few months’ time, creating a humanitarian emergency which was aggravated by the outbreak of cholera. This called for a number of WASH agencies to begin operating in the settlement in response to the emergency with the objective to improve access to potable water supply and improved hygiene and sanitation facilities. The WASH forum decided to conduct a KAP survey to gauge the level of WASH services against acceptable standards and assess existing gaps to facilitate evidence based planning of future programs. The survey includes 384 refugee households in the Kyangwali refugee settlement.

Afghanistan hosts a protracted population of Pakistani refugees, who fled North Waziristan Agency in 2014 as a result of a joint military offensive by Pakistani government forces against non-state armed groups. As of May 2017, UNHCR has biometrically registered over 50,000 refugees in Khost province and 36,000 refugees in Paktika province, where access remains a challenge. Over 16,000 of these refugees receive shelter and essential services in the Gulan camp in Khost province, while most of the others live among the host population in various urban and rural locations. To better understand the needs of the refugees and the host communities, UNHCR and WFP agreed to conduct a joint assessment of Pakistani refugees in Khost and Paktika. The data collection commenced in May 2017 and covered 2,638 refugee households (2,198 in Khost and 440 in Paktika).

There is a growing interest in the consequences of hosting refugees for local populations. Such consequences need not to be unfavorable and in many instances the presence of refugees results in direct and indirect benefits for host communities. This survey was conducted to examine the influence of Congolese refugees on host communities in Rwanda, with a focus on labor market activity and economic welfare. The survey covered three refugee camps as well as their surrounding host communities. Data was collected in May 2016 and covers 427 refugee households and 953 host households.

This survey was conducted to help UNHCR's Malawi office in its multi-year, multi-partnership planning and programming. The main objective was to provide an overview of the livelihood and vulnerability situation of refugees and host families in Malawi. The survey covered Dzaleka and Luwani refugee camps as well as households living in villages surrounding the two camps. Dzaleka camp is well established and has been in existence since 1994 and hosts households from a number of neighboring countries, including Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and others. Luwani camp is relatively new and much smaller camp that hosts exclusively Mozambican asylum seekers whose status was not yet determined at the time of the survey. The survey covered 1,026 refugee households (802 in Dzaleka and 224 in Luwani) during March 2017.

The Republic of Congo has served for over a decade as a host country for refugees following repetitive armed conflicts known in the subregion. The latest is the Central African armed disturbance unleashed in March 2013. This conflict has caused a massive influx of people to the countries bordering the Central African Republic. In Congo, the majority of refugees have been received in the department of Likouala. This influx was added to the DRC and Rwandan refugees already present in the area. Since the beginning of the operation, the humanitarian organizations, AARREC, Solidarité Internationale and the Congolese Red Cross have implemented the actions Water Hygiene and Sanitation in the hosting camps and villages through the financing of UNHCR. Various structures (latrines, wells and boreholes, washing area, etc.) have been installed for the benefit of the beneficiaries. The aim of these actions is to ensure for all sites: (i) access to sufficient and good quality drinking water, (ii) sustainable access to sanitation facilities, and (iii) improve knowledge and practices in personal and collective hygiene. To better understand and measure the current state of knowledge and practices of the populations living in the various refugee sites, a KAP survey focusing on water, hygiene and sanitation issues was conducted from December 13 to 27, 2017. The survey results reported in this document will also serve as a benchmark for measuring the impact of actions conducted in the area of the operation at the end of each year.

The Site Management sector, with the support of SM partners (IOM, UNHCR, ADRA and Solidarités International) conducted a mapping exercise during the months of April and May 2018 in the areas of Teknaf upazila currently hosting Rohingya refugees. The purpose of the exercise was to identify and map the boundaries of local paras, namely group of houses. The mapping exercise aimed to better define the areas of responsibility of the newly established Para Development Commitees, and to support RRRC’s CiCs in the process of defining the new camp boundaries in Teknaf. IOM Needs and Population Monitoring (NPM) provided technical support to better identify the para names and demarcation. The para mapping exercise was conducted in two rounds. The first exercise took place from 1 to 3 of April 2018 in the areas of Alikhali, Leda, Nayapara, Muchoni, Jadimura and Domdumia. A second exercise took place on 21 and 22 April 2018 covering the areas of Hakimpara, Jamtoli, Putibonia, Shamlapur and Unchiprang. This dataset presents the figures of the Rohingya refugee population in Teknaf, by para. These data were collected during NPM's regular data collection exercises (Baseline and Site Assessment), which usually capture information on a majhee block level. The two systems are currently coexisting and overlapping. In order to better visualize how the two systems interact, NPM produced a set of maps available at this link.

The majhee block system represents an important aspect of communities within the Rohingya refugees settled in collective or camp-like settings in Cox's Bazar district. A majhee is a community leader belonging to the Rohingya refugee population, while a block is the area for which he is responsible. The NPM majhee blocks mapping exercise was first conducted during NPM Baseline 9, between 5 and 20 February 2018. As part of the majhee interview process (key informants), enumerators walked the perimeter of each majhee block with guidance from the KI. As they walked, the field team traced their path, marking up the boundary on the tablet or paper map. Upon returning to NPM office, details of these boundaries were finalized on the paper maps. The paper maps were then received by the NPM digitizing team. This team carefully digitized the Mahjee zone perimeters in GIS, using high-resolution NPM UAV imagery as an underlying reference. Boundaries were assigned the NPM Block_ID attribute, which represents a unique identifier for each Site Assessment Location. In this manner, boundaries can be uniquely linked back to a mahjee. The majhee blocks mapping exercise is now embedded in NPM regular assessment activities (baseline and site assessment), hence regularly updated with a frequency of approximately three weeks. The majhee block system is not an official form of governance. The scope of this exercise is purely descriptive and not prescriptive. Names and boundaries adopted in this exercise do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by IOM.
