Conflict and disaster population movement (flows) data for Somalia. The data is the most recent available and covers a 180 day time period. Internally displaced persons are defined according to the 1998 Guiding Principles as people or groups of people who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of armed conflict, or to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights, or natural or human-made disasters and who have not crossed an international border. The IDMC's Event data, sourced from the Internal Displacement Updates (IDU), offers initial assessments of internal displacements reported within the last 180 days. This dataset provides provisional information that is continually updated on a daily basis, reflecting the availability of data on new displacements arising from conflicts and disasters. The finalized, carefully curated, and validated estimates are then made accessible through the Global Internal Displacement Database (GIDD). The IDU dataset comprises preliminary estimates aggregated from various publishers or sources.

In response to the Somalia’s severe drought beginning in November 2021, DTM Somalia launched an Emergency Trends Tracking (ETT) tool first in Gedo and Bay regions in 2022, and subsequently in Hiraan, Banadir and Middle Shabelle regions in 2023 to monitor drought related displacement trends and hotspots in support of operational planning. However, during the first half of 2023, conflict and flooding displacements have been significant. Therefore, DTM restructured its ETT tool to capture multi-shock displacements (drought, flood, conflict and other) from October 2023. In April 2024, ETT was conducted to monitor displacements movements during the Gu rainy season. This latest round of ETT was initiated in February 2025 to monitor displacement movements during the Jilaal dry season. ETT is a crisis-based tool that tracks sudden displacement triggered by specific events or emerging crises. The objective of ETT is to help prioritize humanitarian response and to enable partners to deliver rapid assistance.

This API allows the humanitarian community, academia, media, government, and non-governmental organizations to utilize the data collected by DTM. The DTM API only provides non-sensitive IDP figures, aggregated at the country, Admin 1 (states, provinces, or equivalent), and Admin 2 (smaller subnational administrative areas) levels. The site monitoring tool is used by CCCM partners to carry out service monitoring of key contextualized indicators in order to analyze humanitarian service trends in either site or district over time. Service monitoring can either be done at the site-level or at the district level depending on the scale of the operation. This data which is recorded is useful for CCCM partners and sub-national cluster partners to have as it serves as an advocacy tool for improved and better tailored humanitarian responses from various sectors.

The CCCM cluster established a standardized complaints feedback mechanism (CFM) in August 2020 with the objective of uniformly capturing key complaint data which can be analyzed by humanitarian partners. This monthly snapshot highlights important IDP complaint-related trends and tendencies for locations where CCCM partners are active. Stakeholders can also access the cluster’s real-time CFM dashboard for further data analysis.

"Internally displaced persons - IDPs" refers to the number of people living in displacement as of the end of each year. "Internal displacements (New Displacements)" refers to the number of new cases or incidents of displacement recorded, rather than the number of people displaced. This is done because people may have been displaced more than once. Contains data from IDMC's Global Internal Displacement Database.

On the 23rd of November 2021, the Federal Government of Somalia declared a state of emergency due to drought. Early 2023, after five consecutive failed rainy seasons, most of the country is experiencing severe drought conditions. Based on previous and current drought induced displacement patterns, people will continue to move from rural to urban areas in search of humanitarian services. In order to monitor drought related displacement, DTM has deployed its Emergency Trend Tracking tool since February 2022.

The updated master list of IDP sites contains estimated population data, GPS coordinates, names of neighborhoods/umbrellas (sub-district locations) and unique codes for each verified site. Additionally, the Q1-2023 master list includes IDP sites/populations for proposed catchment areas located in Baidoa and Mogadishu to better enable the formulation of an area-based approach to humanitarian service delivery. When possible, the CCCM Cluster urges partners to ensure that the names of IDP sites used by agencies are matching with that of the CCCM Cluster’s IDP Site Master List.

Emergency Trends Tracking (ETT) is a crisis-based tool that tracks sudden displacement triggered by specific events or emerging crises. The objective of ETT is to help prioritize humanitarian response and to enable partners to deliver rapid assistance. Based on previous drought induced displacement patterns, and the ones observed since the beginning of the drought, the humanitarian community expects that people will move from rural to urban areas in search of humanitarian services. Consequently, this ETT tool which concentrates only on drought induced displacements, focuses on the main urban centers and surrounding villages for each district. The data is collected through Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) at the location level, from Sunday to Wednesday every week. All locations assessed are monitored each week.

Primary data collection employed a key informant (KI) methodology with KI interviews conducted by REACH and CCCM Partners enumerators in locations directly accessible by REACH Field Officers (FOs) and by CCCM partner organizations. The geographical scope of DSA V will be built up around the October 2021 IDP master list which lists a total of 3,589 IDP sites across all regions of Somalia. Following identification of target urban areas, REACH located IDP settlement using very high spatial resolution (VHSR) satellite imagery as available on Google Earth prior to the start of the data collection. After identifying target areas and verifying the existence of IDP settlements, REACH contacted the lowest level of governance (district’s office, mayor’s office, etc.) to triangulate information about settlement location.
