Key Figures extracted from OCHA daily Situation Reports. On 6 February as a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck southern Türkiye at 4:17 am. This is Türkiye's most powerful earthquake recorded since 1939. At least 78 aftershocks have been reported followed by a second earthquake of 7.5 magnitude at 13:24 with the epicenter in Ekinozu/Kahramanmaras province. Tremors were reportedly felt in Gaziantep and neighboring provinces. The Government of Türkiye has since issued a Level 4 alarm, calling for international assistance.

Within the analyzed area of 90 hectares, about 6 hectares of landslide scars were observed. UNITAR-UNOSAT identified 5 damaged structures, 10 potentially damaged structures. Within the analyzed area of 740 hectares, about 50 hectares of landslide scars were observed. UTAR-UNOSAT identified 35 damaged structures, 38 potentially damaged structures and 1 affected road. On 6 February 2023 at 4:17h, local time in Türkiye (01:17 GMT), an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit Türkiye and northwestern Syria. It mainly affected the cities of Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa in southeastern Türkiye and Aleppo, Hama, Idlib, Lattakie, and Tartous governorates in northwestern Syria. The earthquake’s epicentre was 23km east of the district of Nurdagi, in Türkiye’s Gaziantep city, at a depth of 24.1km. Türkiye is vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies on several fault lines, and the 7.8 quake seems to be the strongest since 1939 On the same day, at 13:45h, local time in Türkiye, another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck Türkiye. It hit four kilometres southeast of Ekinozu town in Kahraman Maras province, where the 7.8 earthquake hit hours earlier. As at 6 February, there had been at least 78 aftershocks.
