Missing Migrants Project draws on a range of sources to track deaths of migrants along migratory routes across the globe. Data from this project are published in the report “Fatal Journeys: Tracking Lives Lost during Migration,” which provides the most comprehensive global tally of migrant fatalities since 2014. What is included in Missing Migrants Project data? Missing Migrants Project counts migrants who have died at the external borders of states, or in the process of migration towards an international destination, regardless of their legal status. The Project records only those migrants who die during their journey to a country different from their country of residence. Missing Migrants Project data include the deaths of migrants who die in transportation accidents, shipwrecks, violent attacks, or due to medical complications during their journeys. It also includes the number of corpses found at border crossings that are categorized as the bodies of migrants, on the basis of belongings and/or the characteristics of the death. For instance, a death of an unidentified person might be included if the decedent is found without any identifying documentation in an area known to be on a migration route. Deaths during migration may also be identified based on the cause of death, especially if is related to trafficking, smuggling, or means of travel such as on top of a train, in the back of a cargo truck, as a stowaway on a plane, in unseaworthy boats, or crossing a border fence. While the location and cause of death can provide strong evidence that an unidentified decedent should be included in Missing Migrants Project data, this should always be evaluated in conjunction with migration history and trends. What is excluded? The count excludes deaths that occur in immigration detention facilities or after deportation to a migrant’s homeland, as well as deaths more loosely connected with migrants´ irregular status, such as those resulting from labour exploitation. Migrants who die or go missing after they are established in a new home are also not included in the data, so deaths in refugee camps or housing are excluded. The deaths of internally displaced persons who die within their country of origin are also excluded. There remains a significant gap in knowledge and data on such deaths. Data and knowledge of the risks and vulnerabilities faced by migrants in destination countries, including death, should not be neglected, but rather tracked as a distinct category.

Kakuma Refugee Camp is one of the longest-standing humanitarian settlements in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the largest refugee camps in the world. In response to recent reductions in funding for the Kenyan refugee operation, increased global competition for funds, and a common belief that not all refugees in such protracted situations have the same humanitarian assistance needs, UNHCR and WFP decided to undertake a study among refugees in Kakuma Camp. The main aims were to fill knowledge gaps regarding refugee livelihoods and the level and differences of vulnerability in refugee households, as well as to explore the feasibility of delivering more differentiated assistance and to identify the mechanisms that would need to be put in place to do so. Specifically, the study was meant to determine whether a permanent targeting mechanism could be put in place or whether other ways of prioritising assistance exist when resources are tight. The survey covered 2,000 households and was implemented in November/December 2015.

In early November, WHO initiated a joint WHO/GoB/UNFPA/UNHCR/IOM/UNICE data collection exercise of all health facilities within and near the Rohingya refugee sites, with the aim of mapping facility locations. The first version was published on the 18th November with data collected between the 8th and 12th of November. This second version is an update to the previous version and contains information collected until December 12th, 2017. However, due to the highly dynamic nature of the situation, new health facilities are still being constructed and others removed. It is therefore important to note that this may not be comprehensive or truly representative of infrastructure at the time of publication. Also note that the spatial accuracy of this dataset is at best just under 5m, which can influence the analysis of infrastructure coverage.

This population count of Za'atari Refugee Camp, Jordan, provides information about the camp's current inhabitants, disaggregated by age, sex, block and district, date of arrival, area of origin and shelter type. The count was conducted by REACH in partnership with UNICEF, between December 2014 to January 2015, in order to provide up to date figures about the camp's inhabitants to influence the planning and delivery of assistance by humanitarian actors. The population count shows a total population of 78,086 Syrian refugees present in Za’atari. This is 7,954 less than the last population count of Za’atari camp, conducted in June 2014, which identified 86,040 people. You can explore this dataset further using the Za'atari Camp Population Count Interactive Dashboard. You can also download the [Summary of Key Findings from the Za'atari Camp Population Count, January 2015] (http://www.reachresourcecentre.info/system/files/resource-documents/reach_jor_report_zaatari_camp_population_count_february2015_1.pdf)
