The dataset contains IDPs individuals and households at admin2 level. IOM has been developing a Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) since May 2015 aimed at effectively monitoring and evaluating the flows of Burundian IDPs and providing accurate information on the current IDP situation. The DTM in Burundi has been successfully used in 2014, upon the request of the humanitarian community and the GoB when some areas of Bujumbura were flooded, which caused displacement. This tool allowed registering IDPs in four IDP sites and in host families in four locations and identifying their humanitarian needs. The dataset includes returnees from abroad who are still displaced in the country. They are categorized as IDPs due to their continued displacement within the country.

The context of displacement in Mali remains complex and fluid. Movements of IDPs currently residing in the southern regions to the northern regions continue to be reported. While some have indicated that they have returned definitively, other IDPs say they travel back and forth between the place of travel and the place of origin.

The increase of security incidents in northern Mozambique since 2017 resulted in population displacement as well as subsequent humanitarian needs in virtually every humanitarian sector. To better understand the scope of displacement and needs of displaced populations, and in light of the intensification of the situation, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) activated its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in the Cabo Delgado province in February 2019.

Protection monitoring has also the purpose of identifying people who are in need for specific services, support, or information and refer them so that they can receive assistance accordingly to their needs. In the first quarter of 2022, UNHCR conducted at national level interviews with refugee households to elicit their feedback on the overall protection environment in Lebanon. The purpose of the collection was to use the feedback from refugees to inform UNHCR's advocacy and programmatic interventions with the aim of improving refugees' access to protection and essential services, assistance and information.

This comprehensive dataset provides invaluable insights into the evolving protection needs and integration challenges facing Ukrainian refugees several months into displacement in major host countries. It contains the results of 17,708 household interviews conducted by UNHCR and partners between October 2022 and February 15, 2023 across 5 key reception countries: Hungary, Republic of Moldova, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. The interviews were carried out through rigorous random sampling at strategically selected locations including border crossings, reception and transit centers, collective sites, and assistance points in major cities. The questionnaire was redesigned for this second round to focus on pressing longer-term issues like healthcare, education, employment, housing, and local integration. While the sampling provides indicative findings only due to the non-probability approach, the dataset offers a rich evidence base to inform policy and programming. By comparing results over time with the first round (May-November 2022), researchers can analyze trends in refugees' situations, vulnerabilities, coping mechanisms, and unmet needs several months into displacement. The data collection was part of UNHCR's comprehensive protection profiling and monitoring exercise implemented since May 2022 to regularly gather insights into Ukrainian refugees' evolving profiles, risks, and needs. Detailed methodology documentation is provided to support proper interpretation and ethical utilization of the data.

Darien is Panama’s largest and poorest province. Bordering Colombia, the province hosts a 60-mile-deep jungle, the only breaking point of the Pan-American Highway, linking the continent from south to north. Darien is a transit location for thousands of refugees and migrants, most of them coming from Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba, and African and South Asian nations. According to official statistics of the Panamanian National Migration Service (SNM), from 2010 to 2020 some 120,000 people crossed through this area. In 2021 and 2022, Panama faced an unprecedented mixed movement crisis, with nearly 400,000 people making this perilous journey through the jungle. In 2022, a total of 248,284 people entered the country irregularly through Darien. Before they arrived at the Darien jungle, many of these refugees and migrants had previously crossed multiple countries often through unofficial border crossings, resulting in increased protection risks. These vulnerabilities were further exacerbated, during their journey through the jungle, by many risks and incidents which include, but are not limited to, thefts, physical and sexual attacks, murder, and extortion. Many of these refugees and migrants were also undocumented, limiting their access to basic services. Due to protection concerns, in July 2022, UNHCR started collecting monthly information on the characteristics, vulnerabilities, and protection needs of refugees and migrants entering Panama through the Darien jungle.
